FOGSI and its members are committed to “Letting Girls be born” and to say no to sex selection and female feticide. But FOGSI believes that the problem is not just medical and FOGSI thinks that Law is not the answer to solve the problem of Gender disparity and gender inequality.
Gender discrimination is deeply rooted in our society and in our psyche and unless we make and actually implement long term measures with sincerity towards solving women’s problems and uplifting and empowering women of India. Only a social change and a social drive of education and awareness can solve the problem of gender bias and also many other problems of our country.
It is fertile attacking the doctors and hauling them for silly reasons described in the PCPNDT Act. Doctors are being punished for not having the rule book, not signing their name properly, not filling the record sheets which are absurd.
PCPNDT Act till date has not solved the problem, it has created problems. The medical find of the century “the Ultrasound Machine” is being called as killer machines. Please note today no, No, medical branch or speciality can complete patient evaluation without ultrasound scan.
PCPNDT act has caused a confusion on “who can do ultrasound”, and PCPNDT act has caused a scare among the practicing obstetrician whether to use ultrasound as an emergency life saving decision making tool in his or her daily practice of obstetrics.
PCPNDT act needs to be simplified and the people who implement this law should be trained and a uniform implementation policy should be all over the country.
Let us see and clarify the facts for people who blame only the doctors (FOGSI members & IRIA members) for sex determination should know the following facts.
There are 22,000 FOGSI members and about 16000 IRIA members inIndia . Out of these with the most liberal estimate about 8 – 10,000 FOGSI members and about 10,000 IRIA members have ultrasound machines.
At a conservative estimate India has about 1 lac ultrasound units. Let us say that about 10,000 must be used for only cardiology and urology work.
All this still leaves with about 70,000/- machines in the hands of non FOGSI, non IRIA, non trained doctors who do not belong to any organization or are with quacks. So it is purely and simply unjustified to blame FOGSI and IRIA for all sex determination tests.
The other issue is of Medical termination of pregnancy. The MTP act ofIndia is separate from PCPNDT act and both these acts should not be taken together. In India , it is estimated that 6 million illegal abortions still take place – Again blaming all FOGSI members for these abortions is not justified.
It is also noted that the law is for the law abiding and it is tragic to note that PCPNDT act can do nothing to those who are not registered and still practising ultrasound. The criminal proceeding against such doctors and ayush practisioners and paramedics should be initiated.
FOGSI has taken services steps both administratively and socially against this menace. We have announced debarmant of any FOGSI member proven to be indulging in sex selection and sex selective abortions. We have an all our stationary printed the Girl child logo, we have initiated a big drive on Adoption of a girl child and already 1000 FOGSI members have come forward to adopt daughters.
FOGSI is committed to the save the Girl child initiative.
